With any delayed flight, there was a lot of stress and hostility in the air at our gate. My mother and I were waiting for our plane heading to Denver, CO. It was sort of a last minute decision to make the trip. My aunt, living in Ft Collins, about an hour north of Denver, had a big party planned so I booked a round trip ticket for the weekend. This is all family that I was once extremely close to as a kid but for whatever reasons, mainly life, we hadn’t seen each other in a long time, some of them over a decade. Thank goodness for Facebook, otherwise, I probably wound’t be able to keep in touch with anyone at all.
Anyway, after an extremely long delay, our plane finally made it to the airport. Ten hour delay for a flight that takes just over an hour. After so long you start to lose all hope, if it were to be delayed any longer, I had my mind made up to head back home. Thankfully it showed up, because the weekend turned out to be pretty amazing and fun.
Coming into Denver International, the landscape was incredibly green….and pretty flat. I was under the impression that there were mountains everywhere in this state, I guess I had it a little wrong. After getting picked up from the airport, on the hour long drive north to my aunt’s house, the Rocky Mountain Range appeared on the horizon to the west. The sun was just starting to go down, hanging around just above the mountains. As it continued to go down it made for an absolutely gorgeous and colorful sight, both in the east and in the west.
The next day, the day of the party, two car loads of us went up to a place called Horsetooth reservoir. A very large, man made body of water just north of their house. Everyone was a bit worried about the weather not being bright and sunny, while I kept assuring them that, the worse the weather, the better the pictures. A photographer’s mantra. We got out and hiked a little bit to get some pictures and the clouds in the sky created some amazing drama. The red hues in the rocks complimented all of the surrounding greenery. I don’t think it would be possible to take a bad photograph of this place, just breathtaking.
After our little adventure, we moved on to do some archery, which was quite fun and then got ready to knock out some professional photos. My cousin, Amalie Howard, is quite the author, when she heard I was visiting, she asked if I could make her some new head shots for her books and author profiles, etc. I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to shoot some film, now could I? I brought my Mamiya RZ67 in my baggage and had 5 rolls of Fuji Pro 400h shipped over there (didn’t want to take it through the x-ray at security.) I only needed one roll but I figured while I had the camera there, I could shoot a little more stuff with the rest of the family. I’m glad I did, I ended up shooting 4 rolls on the kids, my cousin and his girlfriend and the rest of the fam. Can't wait to get my film back from the lab, the photos are going to be amazing.
The party went as expected, fun with amazingly delicious indian food with our caribbean twist. Eating that night was definitely one of the highlights, I ate enough for a few people. The next day, my cousin, Amalie, let me borrow her Harley. She’s got a sweet, little, flat black Sportster. Her husband, Cameron, on his Harley Davidson Dyna Wide Glide, took me on a 60 mile adventure through some country just north of Ft. Collins. I had never ridden through anything like this, greenery, mountains, rivers, sweeping curves, farmland left and right with cows, horses, alpacas and we even came across two deer crossing the street right in front of us. I’m so used to my desert landscape at home which seems so dead at times. This place felt so alive. It was by far the perfect way to spend my last day in Colorado.
Even though my trip was short, I managed to squeeze in quite a bit. I fell in love with the landscape in just two days. Everything is so open and picturesque. You could pull over anywhere for a picture and make the most beautiful photograph you’ve ever made. I definitely have to make my way back soon. The airline gave me some travel vouchers for the long delay, so time to start looking at flights.
